KCS switch engine
Title:  KCS switch engine
Description:  This 0-8-0 is preserved at the museum at Carona. This area once had numerous lines to handle the coal (this is about 5 miles from Big Brutus, the worlds largest power shovel), lead, and zinc that was mined in the area. Now there's little left, just the BNSF's ex Frisco lines, and the South Kansas & Oklahoma, a WATCO line that is ex MP.

PM 0-8-0 #1303 - Pere Marquette
Title:  PM 0-8-0 #1303 - Pere Marquette
Description:  This page needed some serious revision from when it was first posted due to new information and errors in this first listing. Good looking 0-8-0 switcher built by Alco-Pittsburgh in March of 1918 for the Pere Marquette as their PM #488. It was renumbered #1303 around 1920. The small sign above the first drivers notes that it must have served the B&O Chicago Terminal when this photo was taken by R.H. Kennedy. The loco slid onto the C&O roster when the PM was finally absorbed into the C&O in 1947. It was again renumbered C&O #43. Unfortunately, the switcher met up with the scrapper's torch in October of 1951. Specs - 51" drivers (later upgraded to 52", 200 psi boiler pressure, 22x28" cylinders, engine weight of 206,000 lb, tractive effort of 45,200 lb.

BO 0-8-8-0 #7035 - Baltimore & Ohio
Title:  BO 0-8-8-0 #7035 - Baltimore & Ohio
Description:  Although the 0-8-8-0 pusher locos on the B&O roster proved "slow and complicated", they were nevertheless powerful brutes who helped move long drags of coal from the mines. B&O 0-8-8-0 #7035 was built by Alco-Schenectady in January of 1912 as BO #2416 but was renumbered BO #7035 and reclassed as LL-1. Unlike several other sister locos who were upgraded to a 2-8-8-0 EL-4 class, #7035 remained unchanged until meeting the scrapper's torch in October of 1949 after nearly 37 years of service. Original specs - class, O-1, 56' drivers, 215 psi boiler pressure, compound high pressure cylinders of 26x41" and low pressure cylinders of 32x56", engine weight of 461,000 lb, tractive force of 107,400 lb. No photographer was listed for the photo.

A future display
Title:  A future display
Description:  When the Illinois Railway Museum received the remaining 11 locomotives of the Northwestern Steel & Wire Company it came with a three-week deadline to move everything out or it would go in the furnace. Two of the engines that could not be moved by rail, were stripped of everything usable before being scrapped. This cab was retained from former GTW #8310, a 1924 product of the American Locomotive Company, in the hope that it would one-day become an attractive exhibit. See IRM’s Rail & Wire Magazine #105 January 1982 for more details on the move to Galt, IL. It is available through the museum’s web page.
