The photos are mostly original b&w scans, some with adjustments and refinements to bring out details. The photographer, date and location are identified when known. Approximate dates and locations have been given to those without the information.

Beautiful example of a 1915-18 L&N shops built 0-8-0 yard switcher, class C-1. Unfortunately no date, location or photographer was listed for this sharp photo.

L&N 0-8-0 #2117 - Louisville & Nashville
Description:
From what I could find, this locomotive was one of a group numbered between 2100-2117 built by the L&N shops in 1919 to answer the need for power during WWI. One point was the unusual cylinder size of 23 1/2"x30" diameter and stroke. Note the fireman filling the tender tanks from a standpipe. Date is approximate.

L&N 2-8-0 #1006 - Louisville & Nashville
Description:
One of a very large group of over 250 2-8-0's built by various companies starting in 1903, this is almost a prototypical view of one. 57" drivers, 190 psi boiler pressure, 21"x28" cylinders, engine weight of 185,500 lb and a total tractive effort of 34,986 lb, it was an overall good mover of freight for its time.

Stripped of its bell, light, number board and main rod, it's obvious that this early Louisville & Nashville 4-6-2 Pacific is sitting in a scrap line. Built by the L&N shops between 1905-07, this plucky 4-6-2 Pacific was one of the first on the roster.Specs- K-1 class, 69" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 20x28" cylinders, engine weight of 187,800 lb, modest tractive effort of 27,594 lb. Title:
LN 4-8-2 #412 - Louisville & Nashville RR
Description:
This resplendent Mountain-type locomotive was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1926. Classified by L&N as an L-1 class, it had 69" drivers and could generate 200 psi for its 27"x30" cylinders. The engine weight was 333,100 lb and it could produce a tractive effort of 53,883 lb. After serving nearly 30 years, the loco was retired in the mid-1950's. No photographer was listed for this beautiful photo and the day in July of 1935 is approximate.

Good, clean looking Burnham, Wm & Co (Baldwin predecessor) Consolidation type locomotive built in 1900 for the Louisiville & Nashville RR. Specifics - class HO, 49.5" drivers, 180 psi boiler pressure, 20x24" cylinders, engine weight of 134,200 lb, modest tractive effort of 29,673 lb. Good looking 4-6-2 Pacific built by the L&N shops in August of 1913. Specifics - K-3 class, 69" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 21.5x28" cylinders, engine weight of 211,500 lb, tractive effort of 31,889 lb. The class was scrapped starting in 1940 with the last disappearing in 1951. No photographer listed.

Good example of a Consolidation that was built by the L&N shops in 1912, a class H-29 loco. Specs -57" drivers, 190 psi boiler pressure, 23.5x30" cylinders, engine weight of 220,000 lb, tractive effort of 46,941 lb. Most identified as a "Pacific Fast Mail" loco. No exact date, location or even the photographer was listed so arbitrary ones were used.

Description:
Delivered from Richmond, this class consisted of the reliable and well-liked USRA light Pacific design. Here it sits in the Louisville yard on this day. After nearly 43 years of service, the loco was retired in MArch of 1954 and would be presumed, scrapped. Specifics - 73" drivers, 200psi boiler pressure, 25x28" cylinders, engine weight of 277,00 lb, tractive effort of 40,753 lb. No photographer listed.
