Title:
PRR 4396, I-1SA, #1 of 2, 1955
Description:
BYC. Here is the first of two successive duplicate 35mm color slides of photos by Fred Kern that were taken at the Brick Yard Crossing in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 23 July 1955. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #4396 and #1638. #4396 is an I-1SA built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an I-1S during February of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in December of 1943, and retired in March of 1956. #1638 is an L-1S (2-8-2) "Mikado" built in Juniata during March of 1917 and retired in November of 1958. They are hauling a mineral train down the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Altoona and points East.
