Here is page three of a three-page article by Gus Welty entitled "De-dieselization." It was published originally in the September 1955 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 44. Photo Caption: "Steam never left certain districts of Pennsylvania. Last December this is M-1 6898 leaving Northumberland, Pa." Photo by Don Wood. Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6898 is an M-1 (4-8-2) "Mountain" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during October of 1926 and retired in December of 1955 after 29 years of faithful service. Also included are an unidentified German reporter's reflections about riding the "California Zephyr."
