L&N Bridge
This bridge on the Louisville & Nashville (now the CSX) spans the Rigolets Pass in eastern New Orleans. It was opened for traffic in January, 1925 and replaced the original structure built in 1870. The bridge features pile trestle approaches and nine steel truss spans, with a 424-foot center-pivot draw span for the navigation channel. This view looking southeast was shot from the elevated walkway to the old drawtenders' house on Rabbit Island, which had been ravaged by the 1947 hurricane but was still standing. About 2/3 mile behind the photographer was the station at Rigolets, Louisiana which was finally closed 14 months after this photo was made.
