On Friday morning 4 December 1970 the Louisville & Nashville’s southbound PAN-AMERICAN whacked a dump truck loaded with dirt at the Industrial Road grade crossing in eastern New Orleans, about 10 miles from the railroad’s GENTILLY YARD and 18 miles from the train’s destination at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. The lead unit, E8A 797, was set out at GENTILLY, where it was photographed by the railroad’s Mobile claim agent Bobby L. Shrum; while trailing E8A 788 was turned and took the train to NOUPT.
