N&W #494 GENERAL WILLIAM MAHONE
Built in 1949 by P-S in Lot #6801 to Plan #7561 as N&W 36 seat diner #494 FREDERICK J. KIMBALL, 1 of 4 such cars (#491-#494) built in that Lot; all 4 cars were delivered in December 1949. In 1958, the #491 and #492 were reconfigured to 18 seat diner-15 seat lounges. The #493 and #494 were both delivered with names, which were removed in 1957; the #493 was delivered as the GENERAL WILLIAM MAHONE (1st), and was sold in 1971 to Amtrak as #8099. The #8099 was retired in May 1977 and sold to the Lake Shore RHS. N&W later (re)named the #494 as the GENERAL WILLIAM MAHONE (2nd), as seen here, which is now NS diner lounge #19 KENTUCKY. N&W later reacquired the #493 from the Lake Shore RHS as the GENERAL NATHAN BEDFORD FORREST, which is now NS diner #18, and once again carries the name GENERAL WILLIAM MAHONE. N&W also retained the #491, which was reconfigured in 1971 to crew dormitory #450, and is now NS sleeper #12 INDIANA. Scanned with an Epson V550 from a Kodachrome original 35mm slide. The photographer at this time is unknown.
