UP RS1m 1270
UP RS1m 1270 at Omaha, Nebraska on an unknown day in February 1963, Kodachrome by Dick Rumbolz, Chuck Zeiler collection. This locomotive began as Bramberger Railroad RS1 570, built in May 1943 and equipped with a steam generator, used primarily to move troop trains to and from Hill Air Force Base in Utah. After the war, the locomotive was rebuilt by EMD, returned to Bramberger in 1951 with an EMD switcher hood and prime mover, retaining the GE electrical gear. In 1959, the UP assumed control of the portion of the Bramberger to Hill AFB and the 570 was sent to Omaha, repainted as UP 1270, and continued working for the UP until it was traded to EMD for new power in 1972. The Alco short hood was retained after the rebuild as was the original GE electrical gear (traction motors), I do not know if the steam generator remained in place.
