Mertztown, PA  Contributor's Pick!
Another Icon of the East Penn Valley is this old station by the NS Reading Line in Mertztown, PA. The Mertztown Station was built in 1885 by the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad and served the Reading Company until 1963 when it was slated to be torn down. At the behest of Brook H. Schlegel, Atlas Minerals & Chemicals bought the station and saved it from demolition. The station desk is a proud piece of the Kutztown Historical Society collection and the original scale from the station is still used to this day in the Atlas Shipping and receiving office. The "Mertztown" sign was repainted by Jim and Andrew Schlegel in 1998. Preserving the past for the future.
