This SD40-2 was rebuilt with SD45 radiators for use on unit Natural Gas trains, or so a nearby fan told me.

Nope, this SD40-2 and its counterpart were modified to run on RLM and diesel fuel between STAPLES, MN. and the PRB on coal trains. The RLM decal on the nose reflects Refrigerated Liquified Methane which was carried in a purpose built tank car. The RLM station in Staples was removed approximately two years after the merger with the SF in 97.

The SD45 style radiators were for added cooling capacity, due to the extra heat the diesels kicked out when burning the RLM.
