Description:  Stripped of its bell, light, number board and main rod, it's obvious that this early Louisville & Nashville 4-6-2 Pacific is sitting in a scrap line. Built by the L&N shops between 1905-07, this plucky 4-6-2 Pacific was one of the first on the roster.Specs- K-1 class, 69" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 20x28" cylinders, engine weight of 187,800 lb, modest tractive effort of 27,594 lb. Title:  LN 4-6-2 #209 - Louisville & Nashville
Description:  Good looking 4-6-2 Pacific built by the L&N shops in August of 1913. Specifics - K-3 class, 69" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 21.5x28" cylinders, engine weight of 211,500 lb, tractive effort of 31,889 lb. The class was scrapped starting in 1940 with the last disappearing in 1951. No photographer listed.

L&N 4-6-2 233
Title:  L&N 4-6-2 233
Description:  It's almost 5:15 p.m. and Louisville & Nashville K4 Pacific 233 is ready to pull out of the train shed at the railroad’s Canal Street Station with No. 12 - the commuter train to Ocean Springs, Mississippi. The 233 was built at the L&N's South Louisville Shops in 1915 and retired on 16 October 1951. The train was officially dieselized - with FP7A's - on 27 July 1951 and all L&N passenger trains moved to New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal on 16 April 1954. Nos. 9 and 12 made their last run on 6 May 1964. (approximate date)

L&N Train No. 9
Title:  L&N Train No. 9
Description:  Louisville & Nashville 4-6-2 233 hustles train Number 9 along the main line at the south end of Gentilly Yard (milepost 800.4). The semaphores are the southbound home signal for the Industrial Canal drawbridge (milepost 801.4), and the track on the right is the south yard lead.

Number 9 was the daily-except-Sunday Gulf Coast commuter train. It left Ocean Springs, Mississippi at 6:20 A.M. and arrived in New Orleans at 8:40 A.M. The train made scheduled stops at Biloxi, Long Beach, Gulfport, Pass Christian, Bay St. Louis, and Waveland; with flag stops at Edgewater Park, Mississippi City, Henderson's Point, English Lookout, Rigolets, Lake Catherine, and Chef Menteur.

The 233 was one of 24 K-4 class Pacifics (216-239) constructed at the railroad's South Louisville Shops between 1914 and 1918. It was built in 1915 and retired on 16 October 1951. Number 9's outer terminal – and that of its northbound counterpart, Number 12 – was changed to Pass Christian on 2 May 1959, and the trains made their last run on 6 May 1964. Description:  Louisville & Nashville 4-6-2 233 leads train Number 9 along Elysian Fields Avenue at Dauphine Street. This was the commuter train from Ocean Springs, Mississippi and it was just a few minutes from its destination at the railroad's station on Canal Street. The crossing flagman has climbed down from the tower and is on the right, protecting the crossing, while an ice cream cart waits on the left. The 233 was one of 24 K-4 class Pacifics (216-239) constructed at the railroad's South Louisville Shops between 1914 and 1918. It was built in 1915 and retired on 16 October 1951. L&N Train No. 7
Title:  L&N Train No. 7
Description:  Louisville & Nashville 4-6-2 number 233 leads train number 7 around the curve off of the median of Elysian Fields Avenue, past the Riverfront Restaurant and onto the riverfront. Number 7 originated at Montgomery, Alabama at 3:45 A.M. and was allowed exactly 12 hours for its 318-mile journey to New Orleans. The train's schedule included 24 scheduled stops and 21 flag stops! If the train is on schedule, the time would be about 3:40 P.M. Right behind the 233 is a Seaboard Air Line horse car. Before the end of 1951 steam power would be replaced with an FP7; and No. 7 - along with Nos. 10 and 14 - would be discontinued in 1953.

Title:  L&N Train No. 7
Description:  Southbound Louisville & Nashville local No. 7 had just crossed the main line of the Southern Railway at N.O.& N.E Tower (milepost 802.7) on its way into New Orleans, and was approaching the Southern’s New Orleans Terminal Co. crossing at N.O.T. Tower (milepost 803.7). The train was powered by K-4 class 4-6-2 234, which had been built at the railroad's South Louisville Shops in 1917. New FP7 diesels officially replaced steam power on No. 7 about four months after this photo was taken, on 27 July 1951; the 234 was retired on 16 October 1951 and the train was discontinued on 23 June 1953. L&N Train No. 10
Title:  L&N Train No. 10
Description:  in 1951-52 the Louisville & Nashville constructed a temporary shoo-fly at Franklin Avenue, about midway between N.O.T. Tower (milepost 803.7) and NO&NE Tower (milepost 802.7) in New Orleans, so that an underpass could be built. Here local No. 10 was coming off of the north end of the temporary trackage and back onto the permanent alignment. It was passing a temporary approach signal for New Orleans Terminal Co. crossing. This train was powered by 4-6-2 234, one of 24 K-4 class Pacifics (216-239) constructed at the railroad's South Louisville Shops between 1914 and 1918. The 234 was built in 1917. New FP7 diesels officially replaced steam engines on local trains 7, 9, 10, and 12 on Friday 27 July 1951; and the 234 was retired less than three months later, on 16 October 1951. L&N Train No. 12
Title:  L&N Train No. 12
Description:  Louisville & Nashville 4-6-2 number 253 was leading train number 12 along Elysian Fields Avenue at Chartres Street. Number 12 was the daily-except-Sunday commuter run to Ocean Springs, Mississippi. The train had a 5:15 PM departure from Canal Street Station, and it was just a few minutes into its 2-hour-20-minute trip. The train's first car is in the new (post-war) blue paint scheme, while the other cars are in the older green scheme.

At this time, the L&N had five tracks on the median of Elysian Fields from the Mississippi River to Tonti Street. The two tracks on the right previously belonged to the Pontchartrain Railroad. Mississippi River wharves are visible beyond the crossing tower at Decatur Street.

The 253 was one of 18 K-4B class Pacifics (246-263) constructed at the railroad's South Louisville Shops between 1920 and 1922. It was built in 1921 and retired on 16 October 1951. (approximate day of photo)

L&N Train No. 12
Title:  L&N Train No. 12
Description:  Louisville & Nashville 4-6-2 number 263 brings Ocean Springs commuter train No. 12 across Canal Street. The train is dead-heading from Julia Street Yard into Canal Street Station where it will load passengers for its 5:15 P.M. departure. The 263 was the last of 18 K-4B class Pacifics (246-263) constructed at the railroad's South Louisville Shops between 1920 and 1922. It was built in 1922 and retired on 7 July 1953. On 27 July 1951, just one month after this photo was taken, train No. 12 was officially dieselized with new FP7's.

This photo was taken from the pedestrian walkway to the Mississippi River ferry landing, just off to the left. The two tracks on the left are the New Orleans Public Belt main lines, the three tracks in the middle belong to the L&N, and the tracks on the right – on Delta Street – belong to the Southern Pacific.
