Interesting locos |
Description: |
There is a real beauty of a portrait of this lead GP40 by Andrew Koenigsberg (in his album Some misc. roster shots) from the Summer of 1978. Lets just say that by the Winter of 87, it was looking pretty rough. The 2nd unit is interesting not just because it is still in GM&O colors, but because there are two different stories about its eventual fate. One has it going to Goderich & Exeter 9543 (later re-numbered GEXR 3835), The other having it end up with NECR via Conrail and then Helm Leasing. Guess I'll need to look into that further.. |

ICG 3011 |
Description: |
David Johnston slide. This GP40 was built in 1966 and was from the first order of IC GP40's. The GP40's brought many "firsts' to the IC roster: the first units with the 645 prime mover, the first units with a turbocharger and the first units with an AC generator. The IC experienced many issues with the new GP40's including leaking fuel injectors, cracks in the center casting area and traction motor flashovers. All issues were resolved by EMD and the IC went purchased additional GP40's. |

Description: |
Always kind of liked this shot as a good illustration of 70s railroading. This ICG crew is working the Conrail interchange in Effingham, Illinois and, yes, there are three guys at the head-end and thats the conductor walking the train with a portable radio slung over his shoulder. No EOTDs or two man crews back in those days! |

I remember at the time often being disappointed to see a re-built GP8 or GP10 on the point of an ICG freight -- why not that cool GP40 right behind it? I suppose time changes your view. Now I appreciate them for the somewhat exotic - if not attractive - creatures they were. |
