CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960
Title:  CB&Q 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-8-2 Class O-1-A 4960 westbound at Aurora, Illinois on July 4, 1963, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. I didn't have enough sense to save the flyer from this trip, so I don't know the destination. The consist was: 4960, C&S auxiliary tender 99518, CB&Q mill gondola 197193, a heavyweight coach, a heavyweight diner, three bi-level commuter coaches, a 7300 series single level coach/power car, another heavyweight coach, and another mill gondola. As I recall, safety railings were welded to the diaphrams of the heavyweight coaches to permit safe passage from the gondolas to the rest of the train.

Once upon a time, you could ride behind a coal burning steam locomotive, and not complain because you got a cinder in the eye. Most of the gentlemen in the gondola are wearing goggles, and from personal experience, I can attest that this was required eyewear for a fantrip like this. You were also shampooing cinders out of your scalp fo the next few days if you didn't wear a hat.
