AMTK 502
Title:  AMTK 502
Description:  FORT WORTH TX Jan 1974 -- Amtrak SDP40F 502 is on the lead of Train 15 as it passes the round end dome observation car on the rear of train 16. The car is the former CB&Q California Zephyr car 375. At this time both trains operated under Santa Fe’s former Texas Chief name. In March 1974 Santa Fe management determined the train no longer met service standards and withdrew permission for Amtrak to use the name. Amtrak operated the train as the Lone Star until it was discontinued in October 1979. EMD built the 502 (b/n 72694-3) for Amtrak in June 1973. The 502 was traded to EMD and most of its internal parts were used on F40PHR 388. Amtrak 502 Oklahoma City OK
Title:  Amtrak 502 Oklahoma City OK
Description:  OKLAHOMA CITY OK Mar 23 1975 -- Engineer Wayne Rector (right) and Fireman Johnny Goff pose with their office on wheels. The two are part of the short pool which operated from Arkansas City KS to Purcell OK. Wayne and Johnny were good friends of the Norman OK railfan group. We even met them for dinner at a restauranti in Purcell after they brought in in the southbound train. The next day they would board the northbound for their return to Ark City. If they saw one of us out taking pictures they would wrap train orders around a flare and throw them to us.

Title:  Amtrak 509, 502, and 500 with Southwest Limited in 1977
Description:  This is Amtrak #4, the Southwest Limited at Albuquerque on October 29, 1977. The engines are 509, 502, and 500, all ill-fated SDP40Fs. But they sure looked good this day--new paint scheme and all.

Amtrak SDP40F 502
Title:  Amtrak SDP40F 502
Description:  Amtrak SDP40F 502 at about 22nd Street in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in September 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This location was known as Alton Junction or Fort Wayne Junction, depending on which railroad you worked for. The track was in the process of being rebuilt, note the second track to the far right is still incomplete. At the time of this photo, that would only be a problem for the ICG. I think Tim told me that the blue rail joiners marked a future weld point.
