Sadly this photo shows the once useful Frisco 2-8-0 Consolidation #979 sitting in the scrap line awaiting the scrapper's torch which was applied during this month of 1948. This would literally be the last picture of it before disappearing in the cutting flames at the Springfield, MO, yard. Built by Baldwin in December of 1906, it had served the SLSF well for nearly 42 years. Specs - 55" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 21x28" cylinders, engine weight of 181,500 lb, tractive effort of 38,160 lb. Arthur B. Johnson photo |
