Album Info:This album contains images from two separate incidents which were ironically taken at the same time in the same yard. Apparently the damaged equipment from the separate incidents were stored here pending the outcome of their respective NTSB investigations. Amtrak #90 "Palmetto": Grade Crossing Collision: 06 December 1977 AutoTrain #4 - Derailment: 24 February 1978 1) Grade Crossing Collision between Amtrak Train #90 "Palmetto" and a log truck: Originally, not much was known about this incident. I posted and inquiry in the Amtrak Unlimited Forum, to which many thanks goes to "Palmland" who posted a reply and passed along this info: The April 1978 Trains magazine has a photo in their RR News Photos section that shows a crushed Amtrak locomotive. The caption says: "Rescuers worked for more than 2 hours on Dec. 6, 1977 to free SCL fireman Richard Mascio from the crushed cab of Amtrak P30 diesel 713 after the northbound Palmetto (Train #90) struck a logging truck at Sellers, SC. Three crewmen -engineer, brakeman, and trainmaster were killed and seven persons aboard the train were injured, none seriously. Truck driver and fireman were seriously injured." Amtrak #713 was a P30CH a/k/a "Pooch" built by General Electric, c/n 40707 and built in September 1975. 2) Derailment of Auto-Train Train #4 on Seaboard Coast Line Railroad, near Florence, SC on February 24, 1978. According to the NTSB records: the derailment of Auto Train No. 4 on Seaboard Coast Line Railroad occurred on February 24, 1978 at 2:10 am, was due to a seperated axle on the locomotive due to an undetected internal defect. Nineteen Auto-Train cars derailed off the tracks, injuring 24 of the 503 passengers.
