SOU Flat Car 51128 |
Description: |
Southern Railway 53-foot-6-inch bulkhead flat car 51128 was temporarily stored in the Louisville & Nashville’s New Team Track at Pascagoula, Mississippi; and the open R-1 journal lid may indicate it was here because of a hotbox. An interesting detail on this car is that it was lettered WHEN EMPTY RETURN TO NOPB RR NEW ORLEANS. The 70-ton car had a CAPY of 140,000 pounds, a LD LMT of 139,700 and a LT WT of 70,300, for a gross rail load of 210,000 pounds. This was one of 500 flat cars built by the Mount Vernon Car Co. for the Southern (51101-51600) in 1942. These were basic flat cars (AAR type FM), but over time some of them – such as this one – were modified for different uses. |
