Album Info:Here are 19 original photos by Mr. George Niles, Jr., that were taken at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, perhaps during 1952. Unfortunately, the locomotive road numbers and the exact dates are not recorded. I purchased all of these photos in a single eBay auction on Tuesday, 25 February 2020.

Description:  Niles. Here is the fourth of 19 original photos by George Niles, Jr., that were taken at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, perhaps during 1952. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #3742 and another locomotive whose number is not recorded. Both are K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" Class locomotives. #3742 was built in Juniata during March of 1920 and retired in January of 1949 after 29 years of faithful service. They're pulling a passenger train around the Curve and down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona and points East.

Description:  Niles. Here is the 19th of 19 original photos by George Niles, Jr., that were taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, perhaps during 1952. Parked under the 12th Street Footbridge is a pair of 4-6-2 "Pacific" locomotives. The one in the foreground is equipped with a front-end throttle and Baldwin disc driving wheels; it awaits its next assignment: pulling a passenger train to Harrisburg. The locomotive in the background will couple onto a westbound passenger train for its ascent up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin, where it will uncouple and return to Altoona for yet another helper run up "The Mountain." Also visible are some of the PRR's 12th Street Car Shops. The names of the railroaders in the photo, the locomotive road numbers, and the exact date are not recorded.
