Title:  Wishram Train Bridge from the Oregon

(epitome of grab shot: 70mph from drivers side, over sleeping passenger, through rolled up window, driver NOT watching camera, but holding at arms length over passenger & leaving shutter depressed for 2 FPS burst mode... while passing an RV (one fourth of the images were of the side of the RV.)

Description:  BNSF 8347 two of two at the front of an eastbound autorack along the Columbia River across from the Hermann Creek area over in Oregon... I know, just because you can, doesnt mean you should - but Id had a pretty dry series of days and little traffic was present on the UP side (Oregon) of river rail traffic. 30x zoom on a pocket snapper under harsh morning light possibly too much for a handheld zap across the wide expanse of the river.

BNSF 6753
Title:  BNSF 6753
Description:  BNSF 6753 single pusher on westbound line of covered hoppers down the hill from Maryhill, Washington - and while I had some cleaner shots (not easy to do, as these were taken highway speed on the Oregon side of the river), for anyone not familiar with railroading through the Columbia River Gorge, this is a relatively prototypical shot: the basalt right down against the Columbia River, the covered hoppers with less power than youd expect since theres very little elevation change (and westbound is downhill), plus the vineyards in the little crevice of harvestable land before the basalt hills rise up quickly. The only major non-typical thing is usually thered be white caps on the water, because the wind blows almost non-stop (theres a reason the Columbia River Gorge is world renowned for windsurfing and kite-boarding: they use Montana wind gauges (hang a logging chain from the fence: swaying chain = breeze, hanging out horizontal to the fence = wind, links popping off the end when the wind starts blowing hard).

BNSF 8356
Title:  BNSF 8356
Description:  BNSF 8356 eastbound coal drag pusher on the eastern side of Wishram - a town with far more trains than youd expect, and rarely in a position where I can snap them from this (Oregon) side while were shooting along - the lack of wind rocking the car, though, makes it somewhat easier.

BNSF 6777 - BNSF 8791 - BNSF 4614
Title:  BNSF 6777 - BNSF 8791 - BNSF 4614
Description:  BNSF 6777 - BNSF 8791 - BNSF 4614 front three in a power quad with eastbound double-stack held up in Roosevelt with lots of traffic that hit the sensor in meaningless (but *very* large stinking files) blurs - so I wasnt going to waste more than one image on this set with individual blobs of units (even though I certainly had the pixels to do it, supposedly - just not the sharpness). (Dang - did Canon spoil me? Cameras break relatively easy, but, dang - any hints on what Im doing wrong? This is my first non-"real" camera maker camera (ie Pentax, Olympus, Canon have all be held and used in the past... but a review said my first choice replacement Canon was inferior to this Sony HX80, but right now, Id pit my ancient Canon 720 against it without hesitation. Im hoping its a learning curve thing... or some setting Ive failed to tweak. I shoot in shutter priority mode predominantly so I can select my speed, then let the camera choose aperture/ISO for the most part. Hints? Or am I done for in shooting/sharing images?)

BNSF 8152
Title:  BNSF 8152
Description:  BNSF 8152 showing up in third position out of four... and while the pixel count and everything else says this shouldve been an okay shot, at 1/1000s at f6.3 and ISO640, Im sorry, Sony - this is a little sad. Yes, I do have the zoom extended to at least 20x and were moving, but this is a routine shot I try to pull off with my older Canon clocking in at half the pixel count and 1/3 the file size, yet yielding better results. Anyone else using a Sony pocket snapper (like the HX80) and might be able to direct me to what Im doing wrong?
