BNSF 4271 idles at the BNSF South Seattle yard. The engine is on the point of a northbound coal train parked on one of the yard tracks. The train is likely awaiting a new crew to take the train to points further north. BNSF 4271 is an ES44C4 built in 2016 by General Electric. Behind the newer GE is an older EMD model, 1997-built SD70MAC 9814. 9814 wears the BN Grinstien "Executive" Green that was applied to these units right after the BN/ATSF merger. These units are becoming rarer and rarer as they are repainted in newer BNSF paint schemes. |

The train likely originated from the Powder River Basin in Wyoming, and is bound for coal export plants in British Columbia. Despite being built in 1997 for BNSF, the unit is painted in the colors of predecessor Burlington Northern. The unit was delivered before BNSF had established its own corporate logo and paint scheme, so new engines built as late as 1997, two years after the merger, were still delivered painted in predecessor colors. |

The boxy EMD beast was built in 2006, and is part of a series of SD70s built with non-isolated cabs, known as "Thundercabs." These units had noise levels so excessive in the cab that they were banned from leading trains on BNSF, hence why 9394 is third in this consist. |

Three General Electrics rumble south with a manifest freight. The train is approaching the South Seattle Intermodal yard on main 1, and will meet a waiting northbound coal train parked on main 3. Second in the consist is Norfolk Southern 4558, a former C40-9W that was rebuilt into a C44-9W in the early 2010s, and later rebuilt into an AC44C6M (Dash-9s rebuilt with AC traction motors) in the early 2020s. Note that lead unit 5667 has burn marks from an excess of unburned fuel built up in the exhaust stack. |

In the left background are the DPUs of two coal trains waiting to head north, and on the right is a set of four units that will be moved into the yard to pick up another train of containers. 7994 had arrived earlier this afternoon on a westbound stack train, and was part of the same consist as the other units on the right. I would wager that 7994 developed some form of mechanical fault, as it has been cut off from the rest of the consist and replaced with another GE. There are no physical engine facilities here at South Seattle, so all these engines have been fuelled by a contracted fuel truck prior to their next assignments. |
