Album Info:This album displays 75 black and white photographs I took of steam locomotives in 1954 - 1956. The early photos were made with a Kodak with fixed settings but some of the others were made with my new Argus C-4 which had a 2.8 lense and very good features. Most of the negatives were lost so some of the posted pictures were made by scanning with my Canon CanoScan 9000F. In most cases, I lost specific dates, so except for photos made during fan trips, the dates are approximate (this site requires a date). I was fifteen when I started these pictures and the 75 represent almost all the steam shots I made before I switched to color slides around 1957. My output seems small compared to the 75 shots someone might take in less than 10 minutes today. But film was expensive for my income back in the 1950's and I never even dreamed of shooting every car in a freight train which seems to be what fans do today. Of course, I wish I had taken a picture of everything I saw back then since it would have been a valuable record.

Description:  I found several 2-8-0s in operation this day not long before the end of steam on the CV (but the AM sun was all wrong). The 2-8-0 was built by Schenectady in 1923. Thats I 95 over the roundhouse. Date is approximate.

Description:  The coaling towers in Brattleboro and St. Albans were essentially the same. I followed a detailed multi-part article in Model Railroader to build an accurate model nearly 60 years ago. It was good to actually see the prototype in action coaling 2-8-0 464 which powered the fan trip I rode from Boston.

NEW HAVEN 3020 - LAST DAY IN STEAM
Title:  NEW HAVEN 3020 - LAST DAY IN STEAM
Description:  I started taking steam photographs in 1954 so I was about two years too late to get a shot of regular NH steam activity. Nevertheless, NH J-1 2-8-2 3020 was held in reserve in Providence not too far from home. The Mikado was retained to furnish steam to a snow clearer which used a conveyor to lift snow into a tank where the snow was melted with steam. The last and only time 3020 was fired-up to melt snow was during the March 20, 1956 blizzard in Providence. I saw her in steam that night at the Charles Street engine terminal but by the time I arrived the next day the fire was dead and 3020 was growing cold. She was scrapped about 2 1/2 years later..
