CSX Q-601
Title:  CSX Q-601
Description:  CSX train Q-601 was on its way from the railroad’s GENTILLY YARD to the Union Pacific’s AVONDALE YARD via the Norfolk Southern, and it was stopped at Bayou St. John behind NS No. 393. It was powered by GP60 5777 (ex-SSW 9675) and SEVEN yellow UP units: SD40-2s: 3602, 3571, 3248, 3839 and 3656 with C40-8 9135 and C40-8W 9426. Because there were more eastbound trains than westbound, it was not unusual for trains moving from the CSX to the UP to have two sets of power such as this.

UP SD40-2 9935
Title:  UP SD40-2 9935
Description:  This westbound run-through train was on the Norfolk Southern’s OUTER BELT at Marconi Dive in New Orleans, waiting for a Union Pacific crew. It had come from either the CSX or NS, and was powered by UP SD40-2 units 9935 and 3460. The well-weathered 9935 was originally Missouri Pacific 3278, then UP 4278, and was renumbered 9935 in June 2000 to free its number for a new SD70M. It was rebuilt into SD38-2 Y858 in January 2002.

Missouri Pacific Freight House
Title:  Missouri Pacific Freight House
Description:  Franklin is the Seat of St. Mary Parish, and is on the former Espee SUNSET ROUTE; but up until 1980 it was also served by the Missouri Pacific. After 1970 the MP used trackage rights over the SP to get here from New Iberia, and on to the end of their branch at Garden City.

Right-of-Way
Title:  Right-of-Way
Description:  The Missouri Pacific abandoned its track from New Iberia east to Garden City in 1970, in favor of trackage rights over the Espee's parallel SUNSET ROUTE, and these trackage rights were abandoned in 1980. This line had been built by the Iberia, St. Mary & Eastern and this view, facing northwest, shows where the MP track had been on the median of West Third Street in Franklin, Louisiana. Franklin is the Seat of St. Mary Parish.

MP 11
Title:  MP 11
Description:  MP U30C's were VERY uncommon in New Orleans, so it was really special to find the 11 as the trailing unit on a transfer run from the MoP's Race Street Yard to Avondale Yard. The train is on the New Orleans Public Belt at Oak Street, and the two tracks in the foreground were the former KCS-NOPB interchange. This GE was built as the 970, and was subsequently the 11, 3310, and 2975.

Slug Set
Title:  Slug Set
Description:  The MP only had four SW1500's, and they spent their early years in the New Orleans area. When they were shopped and repainted in late 1981, they were also wired to operate with slugs; and three of them (1518, 1520, 1521) returned in October with brand-new slugs 1417-1419. In this view on a ready track at Avondale Yard, 1520, 1417, 1418 and 1518 wait between assignments. Their jobs included deliveries to other railroads at the east end of the Huey P. Long Bridge, pushing trains over the bridge, and transfer runs across the bridge to the MP's Race Street Yard -- a 17 mile trip. A set like this could pull a very heavy train across the bridge, with its 1.25% grades; but they were VERY, VERY slow. Before long, all of the slug sets were being used individually as yard power; mostly at Avondale, but occasionally at Race Street. They left in July 1982 and never returned!

MP GP18 1861
Title:  MP GP18 1861
Description:  Missouri Pacific 1861 was built in 1960 as the 4808, one of 24 GP18's constructed using components from the railroad's two dozen FT units as trade-in credit. The 4808 was subsequently renumbered 512 and then 1861. It was retired in April 1984 and sold to Precision National Corp. The photo was taken at Race Street Yard in New Orleans.
